Collection - Dabbling in Surrealism

I have always been drawn to fantasy and surrealism. Intrigued by the creativity and the way it provokes thoughts and ideas. From a young age most of my favourite artists were surrealists and remain so today. This is the beginning of an ongoing series where I will explore ideas and issues important to me. - Ginney Deavoll.

About the artwork

The heaviest, rarest, and possibly the oldest living bird on our planet. One they roamed the undergrowth of our forests but as with many species they faced too many obstacles with the arrival of humans and their newly introduced species. In fact, by the 1970's only 18 kakapo were known to exist - all in Fiordland and all males. The species seemed doomed to extinction. After much searching, a small population including females were found on Stewart Island in 1977. Since then, the dedicated staff from the Department of Conservation are working tirelessly to protect, manage and grow the kakapo population. The current population is 124.
