Collection - Coromandel and the Te Whanganui a Hei Marine Reserve
These paintings depict some of our spectacular coastline and the marine life which it supports. They are the images that come to mind when I think about my time on the water guiding kiwi’s and foreigners alike into the treasure that our Te Whanganui a Hei Marine Reserve.
About the artwork
The beginning of the 19th century saw the New Zealand fur seal on the brink of extinction due to the arrival of European seal gangs. Lucky for them the bottom fell out of the industry and enough were saved for the population to make such a come back that they are no longer on the list of endangered species. Fur seals travel up the coast in the autumn months in search of food and warmer water. They’re often spotted lounging on the islands within the Te Whanganui a Hei Marine Reserve no doubt with ample fish in their bellies.
